Beer & Brewery Filtration

Beer Filtration: Trap Filters, Clarification & Sterile Filtration

Bright, stable beer — without stripping the character you brewed for

EcoFiltrone supplies food-grade filter cartridges and trap filters for breweries of every size. Protect your carbon and DE stages, control haze and yeast, and hold a sterile cut before packaging — all at factory-direct prices with free samples.

Food-grade & FDA-compliant Trap to sterile-grade Drop-in fit

Filtration in a brewery does two jobs: it makes the beer bright and stable, and it protects the expensive equipment doing the fine work. Get the wrong micron and you either leave haze in the glass or strip the body and aroma out of the beer. Here is where each filter fits.

Where filtration fits in brewing

Most breweries filter at several points between the bright tank and the filler. The exact train depends on whether you run diatomaceous earth (DE), sheet filtration, crossflow or cartridge-only, but the sequence is consistent: trap and protect first, clarify in the middle, and hold a defined microbial cut just before packaging.

  • Trap filters — catch carbon fines, DE carryover and stabilizer downstream of those stages
  • Pre-filtration / clarification — reduce haze and particulate load before the final filter
  • Final / sterile filtration — a defined cut to stabilize the beer before packaging

Trap filters (carbon, DE & stabilizer)

Any stage that adds a loose medium — activated carbon for taste correction, DE for body filtration, PVPP or silica gel for stabilization — needs a trap filter downstream to catch carryover. A trap cartridge protects the beer and the filler from stray fines. These typically run at a coarser cut than the final filter, sized to hold a lot of dirt without frequent change-outs.

Haze, yeast & chill-haze control

Bright beer means removing residual yeast, protein-tannin haze and the chill-haze that appears when beer is cold. A clarifying pre-filter ahead of the final stage drops the particulate and yeast load so the final filter isn’t overwhelmed. The goal is clarity and colloidal stability — without over-filtering and thinning out mouthfeel and aroma.

Sterile / final filtration before packaging

For unpasteurized and craft packaging, a sterile-grade membrane removes spoilage organisms (wild yeast, lactic acid bacteria) to give the beer shelf stability without heat. This is a validatable, integrity-testable step — covered in depth on our final & sterile filtration page. Pasteurized lines may stop at a polishing pre-filter instead.

Frequently asked questions

Trap filters typically run 5–10 µm, clarifying pre-filters 1–5 µm, polishing 0.45–1 µm, and sterile filtration 0.45 µm. The right final cut depends on your beer style and whether the line is pasteurized.

A trap filter sits downstream of a loose-medium stage (carbon, DE or stabilizer) to catch any medium that carries over, protecting the beer and the filler from stray fines.

Only if you over-filter. The goal is to match the micron to the job — clarity and stability without pulling out the body and aroma. We help you size each stage so you filter enough, not too much.
