✔0.2–0.45 µm membrane ✔Integrity-testable ✔ Food-grade & FDA-compliant
Final filtration sets the clarity and microbiological quality your product ships with. Sterile filtration goes one step further — a validated, absolute cut that gives shelf stability without heat. Here is what each means, and how to choose and protect the membrane.
What "final" and "sterile" filtration mean here
The terms are related but not identical. Final filtration is the last polishing step before filling — it guarantees clarity and removes residual particulate. Sterile filtration is an absolute-rated, validatable step that removes spoilage organisms and yields a microbiologically stable product. Cold-fill and unpasteurized lines depend on it; pasteurized lines may only need final polishing.
Membrane grades (0.2 / 0.45 µm)
The two workhorse grades cover most food and beverage duties:
- 0.45 µm — bioburden reduction and clarity for beer, wine and many beverages, where a defined but not absolute cut is enough.
- 0.2 µm — the standard sterile-grade cut, removing bacteria for the most shelf-critical and cold-filled products.
A coarser pre-filter is always run ahead of the membrane to protect it — sending unclarified product straight to a 0.2 µm membrane blinds it off in minutes and wastes money.
Integrity testing & food-grade validation
A sterile claim is only worth what you can prove. Our sterile-grade membranes are integrity-testable (bubble point / diffusion), so you can confirm the cartridge is intact before and after a run. Food-grade documentation and validation letters are available on request.
Applications across your line
Final and sterile filtration shows up at the end of almost every food and beverage process:
- Bottled water — sub-micron cut before the filler
- Beer — cold-stabilization and spoilage-organism removal
- Wine — sterile bottling without stripping character
- Beverages — shelf stability for cold-filled products
Membrane selection guide
A starting point by product and requirement. The right grade depends on your fill method and shelf-life target — send us your process and we’ll confirm.
| Product / need | Pre-filter | Final membrane | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottled water | 1–5 μm | 0.2–0.45 μm | Clarity & microbial cut |
| Beer (cold / unpasteurized) | 0.45–1 μm | 0.45 μm | Spoilage-organism removal |
| Wine (sterile bottling) | 0.65–1 μm | 0.45 μm | Microbial stability |
| Beverages (cold-fill) | 1 μm | 0.2–0.45 μm | Shelf stability |

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between final and sterile filtration?
Final filtration is the last polishing step for clarity and residual particulate. Sterile filtration is an absolute-rated, validatable step (typically 0.2 µm) that removes spoilage organisms for a microbiologically stable product.
What micron is sterile filtration?
The standard sterile-grade cut is 0.2 µm for bacteria removal. 0.45 µm is used for bioburden reduction and clarity where an absolute cut isn’t required.
Are your membranes integrity-testable?
Yes. Our sterile-grade membranes are integrity-testable by bubble point or diffusion, with food-grade documentation available on request.
Why do I need a pre-filter before the membrane?
A membrane sent unclarified product blinds off quickly and wastes money. A coarser pre-filter removes the bulk load first so the membrane lasts far longer.
